Waiting on Wednesday: Traitor to the Throne

"Waiting on" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Title: Traitor to the Throne
Author: Alwyn Hamilton
Series: Rebel of the Sands #2
Release Date: 7th March 2017

The sizzling, un-put-downable sequel to the bestselling Rebel of the Sands!

Mere months ago, gunslinger Amani al'Hiza fled her dead-end hometown on the back of a mythical horse with the mysterious foreigner Jin, seeking only her own freedom. Now she's fighting to liberate the entire desert nation of Miraji from a bloodthirsty sultan who slew his own father to capture the throne.

When Amani finds herself thrust into the epicenter of the regime—the Sultan's palace—she's determined to bring the tyrant down. Desperate to uncover the Sultan's secrets by spying on his court, she tries to forget that Jin disappeared just as she was getting closest to him, and that she's a prisoner of the enemy. But the longer she remains, the more she questions whether the Sultan is really the villain she's been told he is, and who’s the real traitor to her sun-bleached, magic-filled homeland.

Forget everything you thought you knew about Miraji, about the rebellion, about djinni and Jin and the Blue-Eyed Bandit. In Traitor to the Throne, the only certainty is that everything will change.

Wow, that cover is exceptional. I love the lighting and the posture!

There Will Be Stars

Title: There Will Be Stars
Author: Billy Coffey
Published: 3rd May 2016
My Rating: 3/5
Recommend: Yes/No

“In a life full of lies, he settled finally for the truth.”

No one in Mattingly ever believed Bobby Barnes would live to see old age. Drink would either rot Bobby from the inside out or dull his senses just enough to send his truck off the mountain on one of his nightly rides. Although Bobby believes such an end possible—and even likely—it doesn’t stop him from taking his twin sons Matthew and Mark into the mountains one Saturday night. A sharp curve, blinding headlights, metal on metal, his sons’ screams. Bobby’s final thought as he sinks into blackness is a curious one—there will be stars.

Yet it is not death that greets him beyond the veil. Instead, he returns to the day he has just lived and finds he is not alone in this strange new world. Six others are trapped there with him.

Bobby soon discovers that rather than the place of peace he had been led to believe he was in, it’s actually a place of secrets and hidden dangers. Along with three others, he seeks to escape, even as the world around him begins to crumble. The escape will lead some to greater life, others to endless death . . . and Bobby Barnes to understand the deepest nature of love.

Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review (thanks to Booklook Bloggers)

Bummer. I wish I could say I enjoyed this series but unfortunately I didn't, there is nothing wrong with the plot, its me, all me. I'm not really in to reading this type of books but I thought I would give it a try anyways and see how I felt about it.

Bobby and his twin sons Mark and Matt embark on a epic journey every night to the mountain on their way home, one night a tragic accident leaves them in a unknown world. A somewhat purgatory where Bobby and 6 others are trapped in this unknown world which they call "The Turn", where no times exists, everyday is exactly the same as the other. I found this quite interesting, this 'Turn' which is what kept me going most of the way, I wanted to know what exactly is this place, where no change occurs, everything is put back in its place and the most odd of them all, each character goes through motion of their death every single night. YES. EVERY. SINGLE.NIGHT. How tedious can that be? The twists and turns in the book deserve a pat on the back (no seriously) I totally did not expect them at all, some of the grey area's is what made this book more interesting and gave it an extra star (hooray for that!)

Bobby is an alcoholic, spends most of his days drinking beer in the house with his sons. That all changes when he enters the "Turn". He wasn't always like this, ever since he lost everything, he lost his faith and belief in God, in his opinion if there was a divine being he would have never let this happen. Although you do see some character development, I can't say it is a huge change. Bobby has suspicion of this world they live in and is constantly questioning their presence in the 'Turn' alongside with George (retired teacher) and Juliet (preacher). What I liked about the characters was how real they were that might sound like a cliche but often in books characters have flaws but they are unrealistic. These characters had flaws and self doubt about their being, identity and purpose. Just like me (just kidding).

This book is soooooo long, like seriously long (three parts long!). I know other reviewers have mentioned this but there were a lot of places where the pace was extremely slow like snail pace slow which is maybe okay for some readers but for me, its unnecessary really. It slows the progress of the book down and gets boring which makes me lose interest (I don't intend to be mean, but it was just like that for me).

Otherwise, this had a lot of potential as the author is extremely articulated as illustrated in the book, but unfortunately for me it won no brownie points (this makes me hungry)

**oh darn I forgot to the thank Harper Collins and Thomas Nelson publishers. Thank you so much for this**

Movie Review: The Jungle Book

Movie Details:
Title: The Jungle Book
Release Date: 15th April 2016
Cast: Neel Sethi, Bill Muray, Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba, Lupita Nyong'o, Scarlett Johansson, Giancarlo Esposito, Christopher Walken
Rating: 4/5

OHMYGOSH! That cover is so awesome, whoever did the CGI in this movie are INSANELY talented human being (s)!!!!! Can we just stop a second to admire it????

SO I watched this movie twice, once in 2D and then in 3D. And well I can say it was definitely a special experience, you can honestly see the difference of how viewing the film can make a big impact on the audience's experience. This story has captivated millions of hearts for a long time now, and I have personally been waiting for this movie for a very long time.

With a stellar cast like Bill Murray, Idris Elba and the beautiful Scarlett Johansson, The Jungle Book is one of the rare adaptions that surpasses expectations and is very successful at the box office. The old classics like Lion King I and II are still a hit today, movies like this one have the potential to reach the level of their predecessors. Have you seen the CGI? Of course you have, I actually got a little frightened when Sher Khan walked past (didn't we all?)

         (Source: Google)

I mean just look at that??? 😱😰😰 Doesn't that give you the chills? πŸ˜–

The epic tale of young Mowgli's begins with the disappearance of his family, raised by wolfs, Mowgli leaves the pack thanks to Shere Khan. Mowgli travels to a near by village with the help of Bagheera, however, Shere Khan has other plans as he intercepts and in the process injures Bagheera trying to kill Mowgli. Mowgli meets Baloo, a bear who is preparing food for hibernation (couldn't we have something like that?) Baloo manages to convince Mowgli to stay for a while and help him. Will Mowgli be safe there? Not according to Bagheera, he needs to be in the man village where the people control the fire.

I always thought The Jungle Book characters were interesting and authentic, each individual has a certain charisma which draws the audience in to their midst, the viewers cannot help but become enchanted. I have this soft spot for Shere Khan and Bagheera, I know he is the baddie in the movie but I cannot help it, I generally love tigers which is why I love the panther too. Idris and Ben deliver their character with perfect accuracy, I just love how they are perfect for their roles. Neel is the heart and soul of the movie, he manages to do the impossible, develop a friendship with the elephants. I also love the notion of elephants being this powerful and divine creature which is true, their strength is immeasurable. The cast is well chosen.

The visual representations in this movie is incomparable, the CGI is the apex of the film. The CGI is so damn real you actually mistake the animals for real, it is even drawing comparisons to James Cameron's movie Avatar, which everyone can agree was movie of the year and the CGI? Oh God, one can only dream of achieving that kind of stardom and praise. I love that, this movie is well deserve of praise. I especially loved the bond between Mowgli and Raksha, it made me want to be in a wolf pack I loved their fierce protectiveness of one another. Another favourite was Akela, you can be damn sure I cried when Shere Khan the little rat killed him 😭😭😭😭😭

(Source: Empire Online)

The film is well formulated, it has everything in there, the sense of wonder every child dreams of watching in every film. It is one of those rare kind of films where you wish you can be part of the film. It's funny, has a lot of drama and suspense making it great to watch it with the family. I love the powerful message this film portrays, it shows family can be anyone they don't have to be blood related (apparently animals comes in to this category too).

Passenger #1

Title: The Passenger
Author: Alexandra Bracken
Published: 5th January 2016
My Rating: 2/5
Recommend: Erm..yes/no

Passage, n.
i. A brief section of music composed of a series of notes and flourishes.
ii. A journey by water; a voyage.
iii. The transition from one place to another, across space and time.

In one devastating night, violin prodigy Etta Spencer loses everything she knows and loves. Thrust into an unfamiliar world by a stranger with a dangerous agenda, Etta is certain of only one thing: she has traveled not just miles but years from home. And she’s inherited a legacy she knows nothing about from a family whose existence she’s never heard of. Until now.

Nicholas Carter is content with his life at sea, free from the Ironwoods—a powerful family in the colonies—and the servitude he’s known at their hands. But with the arrival of an unusual passenger on his ship comes the insistent pull of the past that he can’t escape and the family that won’t let him go so easily. Now the Ironwoods are searching for a stolen object of untold value, one they believe only Etta, Nicholas’ passenger, can find. In order to protect her, he must ensure she brings it back to them—whether she wants to or not.

Together, Etta and Nicholas embark on a perilous journey across centuries and continents, piecing together clues left behind by the traveler who will do anything to keep the object out of the Ironwoods’ grasp. But as they get closer to the truth of their search, and the deadly game the Ironwoods are playing, treacherous forces threaten to separate Etta not only from Nicholas but from her path home... forever.

Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review

I am crying right now. I wanted to enjoy this book so freakingly much that maybe I over did it on my hype. I really don't know what happened

I am utterly baffled with what happened to me about this book, I started enjoying it and then it got to the point where I couldn't bear to read it anymore and it gave me a reading slump so bad that it was months before I finally finished this book. Not any fault with the book, I normally would love books like this but I lost interest on the way and gave it a low reading so unlike me

It's set in different era's (1776, 1940, 1910, 1685 and 1599) which was one of the reasons I felt the book is so long, it was hard to keep up with the what was happening. I kept stopping and trying to get back in to it. I tried to do this book justice but sadly I couldn't get in to it, it started to become a burden. Alice is killed in front of Eva's eyes and she is whisked in to another dimension, where she comes to know the truth about her identity and her past. She finds out, along with her mum she is also a 'traveller' who can enter through passengers. Ironwood is the head family, the one with power who has some business with Eva's mum, he wants the astrolabe (interesting name). Enters Nicholas who has a deal with Cyrus to ensure Eva finds it and he brings it back to him, in return he has enough wealth to buy his own and finally take control of his life.

I really loved the fact that there was diverse characters in this book, this book community needs more books like this.

There wasn't really much character development through this book since the first few chapters Eva's is doubting herself and her mom. Then she finds out her mom has been teaching her tricks along the way. She is only confident about one thing and fights for it: Nicholas. Her epic romance with Nicholas is truly something special, although it isn't love at first sight (thank god for that). Nicholas fights his desire and wanting Eva throughout the whole book, it is only towards the end does he finally give himself over. I was a little disappointed with him, he knew how Eva felt toward him yet he still chose to fight it instead of giving in.

Only two main things kept this book going for me, Bracken's mention of cultural backgrounds and as I have mentioned before the diverse characters. The romance was like a strawberry on top of a ice cream sundae. Yum.

I really am disappointed with this, I wanted to enjoy this so much but I think me reading it and not reading is probably what destroyed the enjoyment for me. Do you have any books where your excited to read it but then you end up not liking it?

Movie Review: Ice Age 5

Movie Details:
Title: Ice Age 5 : Collision Course
Release Date: 22nd July 2016
Cast: Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denos Leary, Josh Peck, Simon Pegg, Seann William Scott, Queen Latifah, Jessie J, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Max Greenfield
Rating: 3.5/5

I LOVE this series, I have watched all of these movies since the first one came out (sometime in the 2000s?) and let me tell you if you have not watched the first movie then you REALLY need to. I am a big advocate on animated movies that have a positive impact for the younger generation (Mattel have started doing this with Barbie movies, reinforcing the ideas that young women/children can do anything they set their mind to. I personally love this).

There is no doubt that this movie could have had a better reception, and although I personally did love some aspects of the movie I do think out of all the franchise this one is the most disappointing. It seems like Fox has ran out of ideas, they could have done better. Some critics have stated this movie is not funny or original in any expect. I do agree with this sentiment, being a lover of this franchise, I love the unconventional ideas the film brought. A herd being formed by a sloth, a mammoth and a saber tooth tiger. All three characters have astonishing and different personalities bringing a ton of flavour to the movie not to mention comedy, Sid who is undoubtedly the funniest in the movie (he also has the tendency to act a bit dense sometimes) keeps the whole pack together like glue. He has the ability to talk sensible sometimes, he is very naive, carefree, friendly and talks a ALOT (me and Sid would bond very well, we would never shut up). Manny, he can seem a bit distant and uncaring, but once he sets his mind to something he can be very courageous and brave. Diego, who is my favourite πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ’“πŸ’“,  can be described as cynical, although he has no intention to be like that he is actually a sweetheart once you get past his tough act exterior.

The nature of this movie takes the young heroes finding out how to stop an incoming asteroid, and to stop history from repeating itself again. Buck, the ever so cunning weasel is the one who realises they must stop this before it ends up destroying their homes once and for all. According to Buck, they can find a way to stop this, however, they must go to the place where the previous asteroids have fallen.

This is where it goes a bit downfall for me, I am not sure whether the plot is what ruined it for me or something else. The new characters introduced where a good attempt from Fox, however, I am not sure they did justice to their purpose as secondary roles. It was a typical storyline - heroes trying to save the world, new characters refusing to help (since they would have to give up their luxury lifestyle. Its quite surprising to know they are in fact very old, poor Sid his love is actually a hundred years old-I'm sure she is older than that but I can't quite remember her age)

Despite the nature of the movie being disappointing, Manny and the other characters show a perfect representation of what a father goes through when his girl is getting married. Ellie's guidance and love for her daughter and Manny does well in trying to bridge the gap between Julian and Manny especially when he realises that him acting like that may mean he will lose his only child. Sometimes in life we don't see how our behaviour may be the cause to losing something important in life and it comes down to our loved ones guiding us in the right direction.

Have you seen any of the movies from this franchise? What did you think? Who is your favourite character? Let me know in the comments below.

How To Choose Between Ebooks Or Hard Copies?

I have been thinking about this a lot, and you know what? I can't decide for the life of me, both physical books and ebooks have their pros and cons and I think at the end of the day is really about preference. TING TING!!! Lets find out shall we? πŸ”” πŸ””

1.  Smell

The Smell? Yes the smell, I am not talking crazy just stay with the me on this one. What I mean about the smell is of the book, with physical (hardback or paperback) there is this aroma from the pages which cannot be explained. Unless you go around smelling each ebook with people telling you your crazy, the scent is incomparable.

I think we can safely say physical copy won this round, 0 for ebook

2.  Write

One bad thing about reading ebooks is you can't write on them  or dog-ear them and put bookmarks in them. Although, with current apps you can write notes or highlight them but its not the same thing, however, one thing I like about ebooks is you can find the notes you made or pages marked quite easily with physical books you would have to put so many bookmarks in there to remember each little thing.

1 point for ebooks and 1 point for physical copies, ooh Team P (easier to remember that way) are winning so far!

3. Touch

You can't really touch ebooks or turn the pages not the way you can with a physical book and sometimes that is saddening (not unless you count touching the screen)

1 point for Team P

4. Accessibility

Ebooks are more easily accessible than physical books. Ebooks are anywhere and everywhere, you can practically read it anywhere and pick up right where you left off. And in some countries its much easier to read on ebooks than physical books since they might get a small selection of English language books in their country.

1 point for Team E, they are catching up

5. Eye Strain

Sometimes with staring at the screen too much (laptop or phone) you can often get a eye strain, its also not healthy to stare at the screen for so many hours which can lead to tired, burning, dry eyes. You don't need to worry about battery with print copies. #ebookproblems

1 point for Team P

6.  Price

Ebooks are a lot cheaper than physical books, with how much you pay for a print copy you can get numerous ebooks for the same amount, which means you get more books to read (hooray for ebooks, oh no for print copies)

1 point for Team E

7. Library

There are no issues with this one, you can create a library both with ebooks and physical copies the only difference is one would be virtual (no issues at all).

Both teams get 1 point each

I think it is safe to conclude it is a draw for both, but at the end of the day it really is down to preference. Sometimes I prefer ebooks simply because I am out all the time and because I know I have my phone with me I know I can read whenever I get the chance, other times you want to just hold the book in your hands. So I love both!

Are you a e-reader? Or do you prefer physical copies? Let me know in the comments below

Waiting on Wednesday: By Your Side

"Waiting on" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Title: By Your Side
Author: Kasie West
Series: N/A
Release Date: 31st January 2017

In this irresistible story, Kasie West explores the timeless question of what to do when you fall for the person you least expect. Witty and romantic, this paperback original from a fan favorite is perfect for fans of Stephanie Perkins and Morgan Matson.

When Autumn Collins finds herself accidentally locked in the library for an entire weekend, she doesn’t think things could get any worse. But that’s before she realizes that Dax Miller is locked in with her. Autumn doesn’t know much about Dax except that he’s trouble. Between the rumors about the fight he was in (and that brief stint in juvie that followed it) and his reputation as a loner, he’s not exactly the ideal person to be stuck with. Still, she just keeps reminding herself that it is only a matter of time before Jeff, her almost-boyfriend, realizes he left her in the library and comes to rescue her.

Only he doesn’t come. No one does.

Instead it becomes clear that Autumn is going to have to spend the next couple of days living off vending-machine food and making conversation with a boy who clearly wants nothing to do with her. Except there is more to Dax than meets the eye. As he and Autumn first grudgingly, and then not so grudgingly, open up to each other, Autumn is struck by their surprising connection. But can their feelings for each other survive once the weekend is over and Autumn’s old life, and old love interest, threaten to pull her from Dax’s side?

I love the feel of this book, not too long to wait now!

What are you waiting on this week?

The Bad Boy Bargain

Title: The Bad Boy Bargain
Author: Kendra C. Highley
Publishing: 14th November 2016
My Rating: 4/5
Recommend: Oh yes!

Baseball player Kyle Sawyer has many labels: bad boy, delinquent, ladies’ man, fearless outfielder… Only one of them is actually true. But then sweet ballet dancer Faith Gladwell asks him to help wreck her reputation, and everything goes sideways.

Faith knows a thing or two about love, and what she had with her cheating jerk of an ex wasn’t it. When he starts spreading rumors about her being an Ice Queen, Faith decides it’s time to let a little bad into her life.
Lucky for her, Kyle Sawyer—dark, dangerous, totally swoonworthy Kyle Sawyer—is landscaping her backyard over Spring Break. Shirtless. And if she can convince him to play along, “dating” Kyle will silence the rumors.
But Faith’s plan threatens to expose Sawyer’s biggest secret of all…and that’s a risk he’s not willing to take.

Disclaimer: This book contains drop-the-book-and-fan-yourself kisses...and touches. Fall in love with a bad boy at your own risk.

Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review

OMGOMGOMGOGMGOMGOMGMOG!!!!! I freaking love this!!!! This is why I love chick lit they make me feel like I can fall in love with life and these stories are the epitome of life . With these kind of books they help me to get out of reading slumps and make me fall in love with reading again *sighs*

Kyle and Faith are both for made for each other it is so noticeable in the first meeting, why did it take them so long with realising their love for each other??? This is one of those times where I wish it was love at first sight, wait I take that back.
Kyle's bad boy image makes me swoon, and fall in love with him all over again. Underneath all that hypocritical delinquent behaviour is a sweet, loyal, caring and most of all hardworking gardener ( I could get used to having a gardener like that!). Isn't that so random? And I love it! Kyle is a lot wealthy than he chooses to show (that is what I think anyways, he has a charger (car) which is expensive?), he does't need to work yet he does so because his father has instilled in him the trait of being a hard worker, I like really this a lot, like a lot a lot (too many a lot's). Faith is a typical prominent character, she is sweet, loyal, caring and in relationship where she is unhappy. She has plans to break it off, however, Cam (who is a real douche bag) has his suspicions, goes and ends up cheating on her. In the process, he ruins Faith's reputation and spreads malicious rumours about her. In return, Violet (Faith's bff, who I love) and Faith devise a revenge on him with the help of Kyle.

I was so caught up in the story, I didn't realise when I finished the book in one sitting. I loved every aspect of this book, the writing style, the themes explored, setting. EVERYTHING!!!! The romance and the characters were what won me over, I loved that it was from both POV, it gave me insight in their heads (even with all the yelling I did it was no use really. I got a sore throat for no reason :'(). Too short for my liking. I wanted more. I needed more.

Movie Review: Zootropolis

Movie Details:
Title: Zootropolis
Release Date: 25th March 2016
Cast: Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, Jenny Slate, Nate Torrence, Bonnie Hunt, Don Lake, Tommy Chong, J.K. Simmons, Octavia Spencer, Alan TudyK, Shakira
Rating: 4/5

Zootropolis exceeded expectations, a movie with a powerful message. These tenacious characters mirror reality today, fight for their dreams, they just like us meet characters who try to put them down and tell you what to do. In the end, you have to trust your own instincts and follow your own heart.

Judy- a young, ambitious rabbit dreams of becoming the first rabbit to become a police officer in Utopia. However, things don't go smooth for her as the others make fun of her, tell her that it is unachievable. A likeable trait of Judy is she is very cunning, it would be your mistake to undermine her abilities. This happens to her a lot in the movie, a lot of the other animals underestimate her because of who she is and her height which is it a lot like reality, people underestimating you because of your age, gender, background, weight, height etc.

Nick, on the other hand, is very conniving, he makes a living of telling lies and doing illegal things which he is quickly apprehended by Judy. Luckily, she uses this to her advantage and manages to convince Nick to aid her in her investigation. Judy and Nick try to uncover the missing disappearances of predatory animals and discover why they are behaving so primal (which is in their nature, e.g. preying on animals they would eat)

I really loved the tone of this movie because it was not what I expected. Despite both main characters playful banter, Zootropolis has perfect combined ingredients for both the adults and kids. It had laughter, sweet moments, action, family, learning from your mistakes, friendship and most of all everyone in the world working together to make it a better place.

Oh another favourite thing about this movie is it stars Shakira in it! Yay! I love her music even though I do not understand the Spanish words, but I do love the tone of her music and I was so happy when her music was played on the screens it made me want to get up and dance.

I definitely recommend this for the family and the kids.

Until next time.

Waiting on Wednesday: Blood Rose Rebellion

"Waiting on" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Title: Blood Rose Rebellion
Author: Rosalyn Eves
Series: Untitles #1
Release Date: 28th March 2017

The thrilling first book in a YA fantasy trilogy for fans of Red Queen. In a world where social prestige derives from a trifecta of blood, money, and magic, one girl has the ability to break the spell that holds the social order in place.

Sixteen-year-old Anna Arden is barred from society by a defect of blood. Though her family is part of the Luminate, powerful users of magic, she is Barren, unable to perform the simplest spells. Anna would do anything to belong. But her fate takes another course when, after inadvertently breaking her sister’s debutante spell—an important chance for a highborn young woman to show her prowess with magic—Anna finds herself exiled to her family’s once powerful but now crumbling native Hungary.

Her life might well be over.

In Hungary, Anna discovers that nothing is quite as it seems. Not the people around her, from her aloof cousin NoΓ©mi to the fierce and handsome Romani GΓ‘bor. Not the society she’s known all her life, for discontent with the Luminate is sweeping the land. And not her lack of magic. Isolated from the only world she cares about, Anna still can’t seem to stop herself from breaking spells.

As rebellion spreads across the region, Anna’s unique ability becomes the catalyst everyone is seeking. In the company of nobles, revolutionaries, and Romanies, Anna must choose: deny her unique power and cling to the life she’s always wanted, or embrace her ability and change that world forever.

O-M-G! Have you looked at this cover? It is so damn beautiful!!! How can you not fall in love with this and what's more it is historical fiction! I haven't read one of those for a while!
