Rating: 2.5/5
Synopsis:
Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt star in an exciting action-thriller about two passengers who are on a 120-year journey to another planet when their hibernation pods wake them 90 years too early. Jim and Aurora are forced to unravel the mystery behind the malfunction as the ship teeters on the brink of collapse, with the lives of thousands of passengers in jeopardy.
Their acting skills are impeccable, both Lawrence and Pratt have played their roles with perfection. However the plot fails to bring spice in to the movie, even with all the movie effects.
If you have seen my other movie review posts, you will know how much I love Chris Pratt in Jurassic World (you can find that here) and I just love Jennifer Lawrence anyways but after I watched this movie I honestly don't know how to feel about this movie. On the other hand my friend claimed to have loved it but I had a different view since I had some problems with it to begin with.
As per the synopsis, it is about passengers who board on the ship, named Avalon travelling to a new planet to start life a fresh, only thing is it would take them a 120 years to get there. Jim is awoken in his hibernation pod, when he first wakes up he has no idea that he is the only passenger on that ship who is awake so he tries to find out exactly why he is awake, only problem is he has access to only certain part of the ship so he can't exactly figure what is wrong with it. He then meets Arthur who is an android but quickly becomes a friend for Jim since he is the only other person on the ship. We don't actually get to see Jennifer's character for at least 1/4 of the film, yes I also kept wondering what is this film even about? Where is Jennifer and when will she show up? I was eager to get in to the movie and see their sizzling chemistry like it is shown in the trailer. I won't go too much in to the story, let's just say when Aurora does enter the picture more problems are not yet shown :( so no suspense. But it does happen later in the film when the one of the crew member wakes up..
I did actually enjoy Jim's character and Aurora too, I think she was more fascinating, I love that she was an author and wanted to be just like her daddy (she had a good motto too something along the lines of you needed to lead an interesting life to write one). I enjoyed learning about her through Jim's eyes as well as watch her grow. And yes their chemistry onscreen is on fire which is really putting it mildly.
I really have no idea how to articulate why I didn't like the movie, I figured it was easier to list them;
- In the whole film there are ONLY 4 main characters, Gus's entry is in the last 3/4 of the movie and not for very long either as his character dies.
- The plot didn't really have any appeal to it, yes travelling to another planet is great but what else is new?
- The only action and suspense in the whole movie is when the reactor gets too heated up and Jim has to go inside to cool it down otherwise the whole spaceship blows up
Now what I didn't have a problem with was the romance, they were both epic together! Eek. The only other thing that made this film bearable was the visual effects, I loved everything about it; the structure of Avalon, how you can venture outer space and so on.

Sorry you didn't enjoy this :( I'm also dying to see it - cos of Lawrence and Pratt, and I love their chemistry - but the critic reviews have also been quite negative, so I'm in doubt.
ReplyDeleteBut great review! I think I will still see it, and who knows, maybe I'll like it :) I can hope, anyway!
