The Hundredth Queen

Title: The Hundredth Queen
Author: Emily R. King
Publishing: 1st June 2017
My Rating: 5/5
Recommend: HELL YES

As an orphan ward of the Sisterhood, eighteen-year-old Kalinda is destined for nothing more than a life of seclusion and prayer. Plagued by fevers, she’s an unlikely candidate for even a servant’s position, let alone a courtesan or wife. Her sole dream is to continue living in peace in the Sisterhood’s mountain temple.

But a visit from the tyrant Rajah Tarek disrupts Kalinda’s life. Within hours, she is ripped from the comfort of her home, set on a desert trek, and ordered to fight for her place among the rajah’s ninety-nine wives and numerous courtesans. Her only solace comes in the company of her guard, the stoic but kind Captain Deven Naik.

Faced with the danger of a tournament to the death—and her growing affection for Deven—Kalinda’s only hope for escape lies in an arcane, forbidden power that’s buried within her.

In Emily R. King’s thrilling fantasy debut, an orphan girl blossoms into a warrior, summoning courage and confidence in her fearless quest to upend tradition, overthrow an empire, and reclaim her life as her own.

Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review, thank you to the publisher

GUYS!!!! I am not sure how I am going to recover from this, if you at look my Twitter page I am still emotionally a mesh *sighs* I am such a mess for so many reasons, this book gave me everything that I didn't know I wanted; love, romance, hope, friendship, bravery, a badass heroine, cute hot guys! How does one recover from such awesomeness???? *sobbing*

I can't go on, no Elsa I can't just let it go

Kalinda has no idea who her parents are, brought up in the sisterhood in the Samiya temple. She is shown to have fevers for quite a long time until Healer Bala found a tonic that seems to keep them at bay. Recovering a little, Kali tries to catch up on her fighting skills (she is considered the weak one) with Jaya. Unknown to her, someone very important comes to claim one of the girls from the sisterhood, for others this may be good news but these two best friends don't want to be separated. Kali and Natesa both get claimed. Kali is supposed to be the embodiment of the land goddess, Ki in the form of Enlil's hundredth rani. Things get really interesting when the tournaments begins, Kali has to defend the Rajah's throne as she is his 'champion'. Will Kali defeat her opponents especially Lakia and become rani?

You know what I most loved about this book? Captain Naik A.K.A Deven, he is sooooo dreamy. Oh gosh, I wish he was real I would marry him. He is just soo sweet and selfless. He supports Kali 100% even if it is something that he doesn't agree on, for them there is only each other no one else.

Kali is brave, fierce, incredibly loyal and not afraid to do what she think is right. I loved her more every moment she saw something cruel happening and stood up for justice whether that was for herself or someone else, she is truly a hero!

I haven't read much books about the Indian culture (which I think it is) but I loved every moment of this book and what it symbolised. Reading the very first sentence just left me wanting more, it was very hard to put the book down. I just kept telling myself 'one more chapter' and before you know it I finished the book. Even now I am like what am I meant to do now? I don't want to read any other book I want book 2! You can't just end the book like that Emily! WHY ARE YOU TORTURING ME!

*GOOD NEWS* I just saw the second book will be releasing in September! Yes I don't have to wait long for #kalen

Black Dawn

Title: Black Dawn
Author: Mallory McCartney
Published: 14th February 2017
My Rating: 5/5
Recommend: YES

The end of an Empire, The rise of a Queen

Emory Fae enjoys leading a quiet, normal life. That is until two mysterious, and handsome soldiers show up at her apartment, and the life she knew is instantly whisked away. Memphis Carter and Brokk Foster come from the magical and war ridden world of Kiero, and upon Emory's arrival she will discover she is the long lost heir to the Royal Line and is thrown into the Black Dawn Rebellion with a dynamic role to ignite the rebels and reclaim her throne.

With both men being darkly woven in her past Emory uncovers hidden secrets, a power held long dormant, and will soon realize there are worse things than supernatural humans, love, loss, betrayal, and a Mad King.

Some things are better left in the shadows.

Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review,

OMG! GUYS!!! How in the world do I explain myself to you without revealing anything? This book might have been a short read BUT it was so much more than that! I was on the edge of my bed the whole time I was reading this! Honestly some of the things that are revealed I did not expect.

Emory, Brokk and Memphis are childhood best friends. They all grew up together in the academy (we get to witness some sweet as well as foreshadowing moments leading up to the present), but what we aren't told in the beginning is what does Adair want? What is the secret behind the book?
When Adair kills Emory parents and destroys her kingdom, she comes to Memphis and Brokk for help so they whisk her away to Earth with all memories of her past forgotten, that is until she is abducted by Memphis and Brokk 6 years later.

Let's get back to the review shall we?

Brokk and Memphis are incredibly loyal to each other, the Academy, their rulers vision and to Emory. They do everything within they power to protect their kind and restore the kingdom to its once glory by the true heir, Emory.

Brokk is what I guess you could describe as part-wolf (as he can transform in to it) but he also has the ability to travel back in time, specifically those that are connected to him. He is incredibly sweet and caring (I wish Mallory would enter me in the book I would gladly be his other half). Leader and second in command to Memphis, Brokk would do anything for those he deeply cares about.

Memphis has been in love forever with his best friend. Although he breaks from one relationship and sort of enters another, I didn't really like that but we are told he has been in love with Emory since they were kids. I truly did want to hate Memphis, I along with the other characters felt like everything he did was for himself really but I assume there is more to the story than meets the eye but he is dedicated and incredibly loyal.

Emory is a feisty one, I really love that about her. She grows in to her powers really quick with the help of Nyx (not sure how I feel about her). Even though she has not gained her memory fully she is willing to do whatever it takes to save her kingdom and her people. I have to be honest here, I really was hoping her romantic interest was someone else and I was rooting for him until that devastating secret is revealed. Now I know they can't be together but that doesn't mean he can't be with me right? XD.

Wildflower Bay: Part One

Title: Wildflower Bay: Part One
Author: Rachael Lucas
Published: 19th May 2016
My Rating: 3/5
Recommend: Yes/No

Isla's got the designer clothes and dream job as head stylist at the most exclusive salon in Edinburgh. The fact that she's been so single-minded in this quest that she's forgotten to have a life has completely passed her by - until disaster strikes.
With her flaky flat mate AWOL and even her reliable old dad a bit distracted, Isla is out of options.
Forced into a corner, she heads to the remote island of Auchenmor to help out her aunt who is in desperate need of an extra pair of hands at her salon.
Finn is thirty-five and reality has just hit him hard. Now his best friends are about to have a baby and everything is changing. When into his life walks Isla . .

I am actually not so sure about this book, I am normally all in for these books however I kind of found Isla annoying at the same time as feeling sorry for her. I have to admit, I kind of hated Chantelle, I am not sure who fault is was for the colour mix up when Isla does Kat's hair but I do know in reality would a stylist honestly be sacked for this? I really did love when she sends those drunken texts to her though, I really did feel like giving her a punch.

I felt really bad for Isla, she loses everything in what seems 24 hours even her flat mate who is supposed to be from a wealthy family kind of annoyed me because all she did was party not really caring about anything.

Luckily, her dad comes to the rescue although I found him kind of pushy and disliked when he made the decision for Isla to help her aunt at the island but maybe this is exactly what she needed and Finn.
We aren't really given much about their relationship except that he is a sculptor, his introduction scene is really funny, I really LOL!!!! *wipes tears from my eyes*. Not sure if I will continue with this series, I feel like I have already read this story before and it didn't really hook me in as I wanted it to.

Time to Win

Title: Time to Win
Author: Harry Brett
Published: 27th April 2017
My Rating: 4/5
Recommend: YES!

The first in an unmissable crime series from an exciting new voice in the genre - think Raymond Chandler meets The Sopranos in Great Yarmouth.

'The Godfather in Great Yarmouth' Ian Rankin

'A winner on all counts' Megan Abbott

When local crime boss Richard Goodwin is pulled from the river by his office it looks like suicide. But as his widow Tatiana feared, Rich collected enemies like poker chips, and half of Great Yarmouth's criminal fraternity would have had reason to kill him.

Realising how little she knows about the man she married, Tatty seeks to uncover the truth about Rich's death and take over the reins of the family business, overseeing a waterfront casino deal Rich hoped would put Yarmouth on the map.

Out of the shadows at last, it is Tatty's time now, and she isn't going to let Rich's brother, or anyone else, stand in her way. But an American has been in town asking the right people the wrong questions, more bodies turn up, along with a brutal new gang. The stakes have never been higher.

With her family to protect, and a business to run, Tatty soon learns that power comes with a price . . .

Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review

Oh wow, this is the kind of book that makes you question everything in the world and trust no one. And I do mean no one. This is anything unlike I have ever read and I loved every minute of it, I ended up reading this in one sitting.

After the demise of Rich, everything is in chaos, the business, the family, his friends and everything he worked towards. Everyone just seems to have their own agenda and only care about themselves, it is also intriguing the way Rich dies, your constantly left in 'how, what?' mode. Nothing seems to make sense but then it does...

Tatty really surprised me, I expected her to be one of those weak characters who really just cry all the time, that can be a little off putting. But she is nothing like that, she is strong, hot headed, resilient, stubborn and really finds herself after Rich dies. There are a lot of things she doesn't know about her husband Rich, but she really rises up to the situation to take care of things and her family.

Another character that really I adored was Frank, I really admire people who are incredibly loyal even after the person dies, it is not a very easy thing to do so I have great respect for people who do it. He might seem big and intimidating for his size, but he really does care and would do anything for those he loves.

The plot takes an interesting twist as Rich is shown to be playing the game, knowing how to bend the rules and where to avoid any suspicions whilst also gaining his own advantage. He is involved in every crime possible; drug dealing, money laundering, fraud etc. Everything becomes a problem once he dies and secrets come to the surface. The pace was a little slow at the beginning, but you get quite hooked in to the story early on (Ben and Sam are exceptional characters and I love their support for their mother Tatty- both of them are awesome).

I have never read any of Brett's books before, but I completely fell in love with his style of writing. I love how equally dark and alluring the cover as well as the story is, it is mysterious but it grabs you by the throat and compels you to finish the story.

Time to Win is a dark compelling story that once you start reading you can't put it down, it is exceptional in captivating its audience with its twisted tale and ruthless characters.

Until next time my friends! :) sure to check the other stops on the tour!

The Rattled Bones

"Waiting on" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Title: The Rattled Bones
Author: S.M Parker
Series: N/A
Release Date: 22nd August 2017

Unearthing years of buried secrets, Rilla Brae is haunted by ghostly visions tied to the tainted history of a mysterious island in this haunting novel from the author of The Girl Who Fell.

Maine-bred, independent Rilla Brae is no stranger to the deep. She knows the rhythms of hard work and harder seas. But when she experiences the sudden death of her father, the veil between the living and the dead blurs and she begins to be haunted by a girl on a nearby, uninhabited island. The girl floats a song over the waves, and it is as beautiful as it is terrifying. Familiar and distant.

Then Rilla meets Sam, a University of Southern Maine archeology student tasked with excavating the very island where the ghostly girl has appeared. Sam sifts the earth looking for the cultural remains of an island people who were forcibly evicted by the state nearly a hundred years ago. Sam tells Rilla the island has a history no locals talk about—if they know about it at all—due to the shame the events brought to the working waterfront community. All Rilla knows for sure is that the island has always been there—an eerie presence anchored in the stormy sea. Now Sam’s work and the ghostly girl’s song lure Rilla to the island’s shores.

As Rilla helps Sam to unearth the island’s many secrets, Rilla’s visions grow—until the two discover a tragedy kept silent for years. And it’s a tragedy that has everything to do with Rilla’s past.

After Hello

Title: After Hello
Author: Mhairi McFarlane
Published: 26th January 2017
My Rating: 4/5

A short story sequel to the bestselling romcom You Had Me At Hello!
In You Had Me At Hello, the one who got away came back… but what happened next?
Together, apart and then back together again, Rachel and Ben had a rollercoaster ride to get here. But now happily in love and partners in crime once more, it feels like it’s all been worth it.
But when a face from the past reappears, misunderstandings come between them once more.
Can they hold on to their happy ever after?

This book was so good, it had everything I wanted and never expected. It had romance, sweet scenes, laughter, jealousy, rivalry, tears and heartbreak. I feel like this book is a lot like Love Rosie by Cecelia Ahern.

I really should have read, You Had Me at Hello first before reading this book, again I could see some similarities with Love, Rosie ( I really need to read this book, it's been a while since I read this).

Ben and Rachel don't have it easy in this book, if anything certain incidents happen that threaten to tear them apart. And I don't really blame Rachel for feeling jealous or suspicious of Ben, she can't help but think like that especially when she tries to confront him and all he does either ignore her suspicions or tells her judgment of character is wrong. There are secondary characters in this book that play a part in all of this, Owen and Esther. I wonder if Esther really is Ben's ex-wife? Owen is a little creepy too since he lies and seems to have a crush on Rachel.

I really loved her friends Caroline and Mindy (she is my fav because she is more like me, haha), they are some of the smartest you can ever meet, they always try to steer Rachel in the right way.

Ben and Rachel's chemistry is undeniable, it is hard not to fall in love with this pair. I have to admire Ben, he is strong, intelligent, caring and very understanding. They really do balance each other out with their flaws.

Spotlight: Remnants

Hey guys, today I am spotlighting a mystery book that I think you guys will enjoy, let me know what you think! I have been meaning to do this for a while now, but as you know sometimes life happens and things just go on the back burner for a while (is that even a correct figure of speech?) I have no idea!

Title: Remnants
Author: Carolyn Arnold
Publication: 11th April 2017

All that remains are whispers of the past…

When multiple body parts are recovered from the Little Ogeechee River in Savannah, Georgia, local law enforcement calls in FBI agent and profiler Brandon Fisher and his team to investigate. But with the remains pointing to three separate victims, this isn’t proving to be an open-and-shut case.

With no quick means of identifying the deceased, building a profile of this serial killer is more challenging than usual. How are these targets being selected? Why are their limbs being severed and their bodies mutilated? And what is it about them that is triggering this person to murder?

The questions compound as the body count continues to rise, and when a torso painted blue and missing its heart is found, the case takes an even darker turn. But this is only the beginning, and these new leads draw the FBI into a creepy psychological nightmare. One thing is clear, though: The killing isn’t going to stop until they figure it all out. And they are running out of time…

Let's talk: Don't you just love a good mystery book? I do. What did you guys think?

Swept Away

Title: Swept Away
Author: Penny Parkes
Published: 9th February 2017
My Rating: 4/5
Recommend: Yes

The residents of Larkford are having an eventful evening! A feel-good short story for fans of Katie Fforde, Gervaise Phinn and Milly Johnson

What a delight to read, I really love how everyone comes together in this story. Holly and her new hot boyfriend Taffy have special arrangement for Valentines day, spending the day alone together is all these Doc's can ask for. Unfortunately this doesn't go to plan. Barry decides to hold a special birthday party for Elsie (fourth twenty - first) and requires the help from Holly and Taffy to invite all of her dearest and closest friends (wouldn't you love that, if you were 84 years old and someone would surprise you like that?)

When the river starts flooding the town, the whole of Larkford get together and help one another in their time of need. It is shown (often in small towns where everyone knows everyone) the people of Larkford are a close knit community. I really loved seeing how the two doctors go around making sure everyone is okay and checking in their patients.

I also loved the bonding between Holly and Taffy although nothing went to plan they still came through with putting their duties first.
